Only by peace can the human heart gain sovereignty over the darkness of fear and the desires of the ego. The world grasps and holds at what is only temporal, as if life is a mere game of competitive oneupmanship. The winners. The losers. The accounting and counting of what eventually amounts to nothingness. But the truth of the soul is a love that transcends this world, where the only measure is the heart’s capacity for the sheer honesty of its beauty and being and destiny. We are not sent to our fates by a cold and uncaring God. It is rather by our own choosing do we recede into darkness or proceed into light. Only by peace can the heart lead the way forward. The conscious decision to follow that path is a holy power, a divine gift. In the years that fall behind us may we all gain the awareness that is peace and acceptance and join our hearts in the grandeur that is love everlasting.
I am happy to announce that I will be leading and presenting a one-day nature photography workshop at The Inn at Cedar Falls in Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio. This program will be limited to the first 20 people who register (by emailing me @ firstname.lastname@example.org) and will be a nice balance between classroom instruction on digital editing and field shooting locations to include the beautiful waterfalls and woodlands of what I consider the most scenic location in Ohio. The cost is $89 per person which includes lunch at The Inn. Transportation and accommodations are not included but I am happy to provide some excellent suggestions as to where to stay in the area. Of course The Inn at Cedar Falls is always my first recommendation.
May in Hocking Hills is spectacular and I look forward to leading the group to my favorite locations and providing instruction on composition, lighting, equipment, settings for best results using the DSLR camera and even offering my best tips for nature photography with the iPhone and other camera phones. My workshops are open to all levels of experience. One thing I don’t do is my own shooting while teaching my workshops. I am there for my students! The reason we seek so much solace in nature is due to our desire for the purity of free will, balance and harmony. True, we can’t live without each other and there is no life without love, but we become easily overburdened in our mess and mix of expectations and emotions, especially when the darkness of manipulation sets in. There is no manipulation in nature. It just is. Nature always renews what is right so that we can go on with our best despite constantly tripping over the mess we make of ourselves. It’s in the mountains, on the ocean, in the woods, where, when we are quiet enough the healing begins in repairing all the wear and tear of want and ego. Church? Nature is where you will find the most reverent of chapels and the most magnificent of cathedrals. It’s not un-holy. It’s exactly the opposite.
The bare rawness of winter has a way of revealing character, a stripping away to what is perhaps hidden in the grandeur of the other seasons. There is a quiet beauty to it too, like the hush between falling snow and nothing but the whisper of cold night air under winter stars. We need winter where the heart speaks loudest. Not in want of the other seasons but in the truth made known in fortitude, patient endurance and the revealing of what resides on the base layer of our being.
The harmony of heart, spirit and soul. There are moments and places where all is joined in the seamless, singular expression of being fully present, aware and receiving. Perhaps not in perfection but yet in the pureness of beauty joined with peace and longing. I marvel in wonder of what is arrayed before my eyes and suddenly all is meant to be.
I am thankful for the opportunity to appear on the September 29 2015 episode of “Living Dayton,” which airs at noon on WDTN Channel 2 here in the Dayton area. I had fun showing a few sample images and talking photography with host Sallie Taylor.
